LUMO Labs and Graduate Entrepreneur invest in Dutch startup Surgical Reality for advanced 3D technology for surgeons.
Press release February 13, 2025
Eindhoven, February 13, 2025 – Surgical Reality, a medical imaging startup focused on developing and commercializing surgical imaging technology, today announced receiving investment from LUMO Labs Graduate Entrepreneur and Horizon Flevoland for the further development and roll-out of their plug & play software solution that enables surgeons to transform any pulmonary CT into a fully labelled 3D model of the whole lung within 10 minutes.
The newly raised funds will be allocated towards obtaining regulatory approval in Europe, commercialization and developing additional features for additional benefits for surgeons, other OR staff, and ofcourse the patients.
Traditional surgical imaging is based on flat (2D) CT images where the surgeon mentally creates a 3D map of the patient’s anatomy. Considering the huge variation in patient anatomy, this could lead to complications.
Surgical Reality’s core software application allows surgeons to create a high-fidelity, coloured, patient-specific 3D model within a matter of minutes. Furthermore, the interactive models allow surgeons to deform the patient’s anatomy intra-operatively to simulate each step of the procedure. No other application worldwide is known to have such an advanced feature.
The technology is currently available in the Netherlands, Germany, and the US. To date already well over 350 surgeries have been performed supported by Surgical Reality. Research conducted by the Erasmus MC, shows an improvement of surgical plan in more than 50% of cases compared to CT-only surgical preparation.
Sven Bakkes, Founding Partner at LUMO Labs says: “We are impressed with Surgical Reailty’s systematic surgeon- and patient-centered development processes that have resulted in a digital medical device that addresses a clear unmet clinical need. Their CT-based 3d models allow surgeons to comprehend the individual patient’s anatomy better, which permits optimized surgical planning and first-time-right procedures. We also see the educational value of the technology and how it contributes to educating and engaging OR staff before and during surgery.”
Throughout the development process, medical specialists worked alongside Surgical Reality’s computer vision, 3D, AI and quality engineers. The close collaboration allows Surgical Reality to efficiently develop the new generation of medical imaging. The company is ISO 13485 and ISO 27001 certified and working towards medical device approval within Europe, ensuring compliance with the highest medical and data security standards.
Chris Hordijk, Founder & CEO Surgical Reality says: “At Surgical Reality we’re proud and delighted to be backed by leading Dutch investors Graduate Entrepreneur and LUMO Labs. Graduate Entrepreneur provides access to a very relevant academic healthcare network, while LUMO Labs brings thorough experience and expertise in taking the company to the next stage and commercialisation, as well as connections to other health startups.”
Filip Cuypers, Principal at Graduate Entrepreneur says: “We are excited to partner with Chris, Mike, Amir and the team at Surgical Reality to bring their cutting-edge technology to market. Scientific evidence shows that advanced pre-operative and intra-operative visualization enhances surgical planning for lung cancer procedures, leading to better patient outcomes. With a rapidly growing 3D visualization market, we believe Surgical Reality is uniquely positioned to become a leader in the space and expand into other medical fields, revolutionizing surgical care and improving the lives of many.”
